I don’t think I have ever participated in or attended a church league softball game where one team or the other completely exemplifies Christlike behavior.
Often times, teams blame the team-members who play but don’t attend the church for being the rowdy bunch. But in my experience, in over 20 years of playing or watching church league softball, the problem is typically church leaders grumbling and complaining about the score or close calls. I have witnessed fights and arguments break out between churches. Here are some song lyrics that sum up church league softball well.
“Church League, Softball, Fist Fight
A body layin’ on the hands ‘neath the left field lights
Knockin out four teeth, gettin a busted lip
Aint exactly my idea of Christian Fellership”
As comical as these lyrics are, many times they are true. Tonight I participated in a church league softball game. The other team was very frustrated over some calls and our teams pitching…which just so happened to be coming from me. I pitched a lot of unhittable balls.
During one bad call, our team captain, addressed the umpire and explained the rule. We could have forced a player to be out because of the mistaken call but our captain let it stand and we kept playing. We didn’t fuss and I was proud of our team. We lost that game, but we showed true sportsmanship and showed evidence of the fruit of the spirit of patience and self-control. Later on I drove in the game winning run… but my favorite part of the night was how we handled the bad call in a Christ like manner. Good job HB.
I know many of you will ask me what song these lyrics are from. Disclaimer… I do not personally approve of a couple words in the song, but if you want to watch it you can find it here.
What’s the craziest moment you have had watching or playing church league softball?

Little Timmy Wilson is the writer and singer of this song. It is funny, but it is all too true. People need to remember the Lord is watching and we must exemplify what Christ wants us to exemplify.
God Bless.
