Say Yes to Dress(ing up): Hope’s Hacks

(some ways to break up that writer’s block)

This month’s cure: Say Yes to Dress(ing up)
What the cure is: Wearing something fun while you write.
Why the cure will help: They say dress for the job you want to have. I say, dress for the book you want to write. It’s sometimes hard to write a book set in the 1600s while wearing sweatpants. So these tips can help you dress for success when it comes to your first draft.

Writing historical? This one’s a bit obvious. Yes, you don’t need to drop a thousand dollars on a period costume (please save that money for something a little more useful like Amazon giveaways or Facebook ads), but an outfit that reminisces the time period can help your writing go a long way. Think suits, peasant tops, or even colors that would’ve permeated the fashion of that time.

Writing something more laid-back? Christian Living or Self-Help for the everyman? Here can break out a hoodie and sweat pants.

Writing something more business-like? You get the gist.

Writing fantasy or sci-fi? Granted, you may want to avoid public places for this one (unless, like me, you’ve paraded around your downtown in fairy wings – I do have picture proof) but have a little fun with this one.

You can also dress as one of your characters, especially the POV one, but get creative with it. And if you do happen to go out in public dressed as your lead, know that people are staring because they think you’re awesome and they want to be you (no other reason . . . at all).
